Tri-Athlete!

Kylie competed in her first Olympic length Triathlon in Ocean Shores this weekend!
We camped overnight Friday and went to cheer her on Saturday morning.  I loved the small town atmosphere of the race.  It was easy to get to each back and forth from each event so we could cheer her on.
First she swam 1 mile in Duck Lake

She was one of the few without a wetsuit!

Then she biked 25 miles.

The she ran 6.2 miles!

When she finished, she was tired, but said she will definitely do another one!
Kylie and "Coach Sal," her good friend Sallie, who was her inspiration and mentor.
Sallie did a 1/2 Ironman, which Kylie aspires to do someday.

Way to go, Kylie!  We love you!

Seattle Rock N Roll 1/2 Marathon

Is there a better way to celebrate a gorgeous day in Seattle than running a 1/2 marathon?  I think not!

This lovely group agrees with me!  We all got on the 5:20 a.m. ferry to Seattle, full of nerves, excitement and adrenaline.
Leslie, Me, TJ, Rachael, Mary, and Jared...We're only 1/2 crazy!

Me, Mary and Rachael
I wore my red hat so Brad could find me more easily at the finish line!

 Leslie, me, and Mary
We were getting a little nervous, especially since Leslie forgot her number at home!  Fortunately there was a lost number booth, so she was able to get another one and we didn't have to try to sneak her on to the course!

Am I ready?  I'd better be!

And we did it!
We couldn't find Mary's kids for the picture, but they did it, too!
We did find Bryce, who had stayed in Seattle the night before.

The course was beautiful, difficult, hot, exhilirating!  I especially loved running down Rainier Avenue with Mt. Rainier towering in the distance, running along Lake Washington, up the I-90 express lanes in the tunnel (although the band at the end of the tunnel was terrible...it sound like we were descending into hell!), along the express lanes towards Quest and Safeco Fields, and along the viaduct with Elliot Bay and the ferries in the distance.  The last mile was the longest and the hardest!  At one point I thought I saw the finish line ahead only to be sorely disappointed that it was only a large blue construction crane!  Turning the last corner and realizing the finish line was at the end of a sizeable hill was a little disheartening, but seeing and hearing Brad, Jillian, and Ben cheering for me right before the finish line gave me the extra boost I needed!  My time was slower than my first 1/2 marathon last year, but I expected that and wasn't disappointed.  I met a woman who runs one 1/2 marathon a month...I'm not quite there yet, but I think I'll keep doing one a year at least!

Let's Get Dirty!

Have I ever mentioned that I have crazy friends who convince me to do things that are against my better judgement? Once again, they led me on an adventure I never would have considered before I met them...The Dirty Dash (a 5K obstacle course/run through the mud).  I was not only grossed out by the idea of slogging through the mud, I was worried about not being strong enough to conquer the obstacles.  "Don't worry, we'll help you!" my kind friends said.  "It will be fun!" "We'll all stick together!" "Just think of the photo ops!" were their other convincing arguments.  When we signed up for this event several months ago, it was before we knew Mariann (far right) would be moving to Texas at the end of August.  It was very fitting that this was our farewell "Fantastic Four" event.  The majority of the pictures that follow were taken by "Little Blue," Mariann's intrepid camera who has documented our many adventures over the past four years.

Here we are, excited and nervous, and CLEAN, before the start.

When I told Kylie I was going to do the Dirty Dash, she was immediately on board.  She signed up her good friend, Erin as well.  Gretchen's daughter, Julia, Brooke's son, Jared, Mariann's husband and son, Jimmy and Izaac also joined our crazy team.

Groups started the "race" every twenty minutes in heats of about 200 people.  As we all herded together at the Start line, the announcer told us it wasn't really a race since they weren't timing us.  He went over the rules, which included, "If you see someone trying to skip an obstacle, push them in the mud!"

We were feeling a little too clean, and decided to dirty things up a bit...

Here we go!  This was the only part we really ran, for maybe 1/2 a mile at the beginning.  I was starting to think, "This isn't so bad, not too muddy..."

Then we got to the mud river, where Brooke showed her rule following abilities by trying to push down anyone in her way!

This "river" smelled disgusting!

The first of the real obstacles...

Kylie set the standard by swimming through.

A tire obstacle...not too hard...

Kylie decided she wasn't getting dirty enough,

so she face planted in the muck.

Slogging up a hill, fortunately there was a cargo net to help us up.  It was getting really muddy and slippery!

The slip and slide was a lot of fun.  Kylie was a little upset about getting washed off, though!

At the bottom of the slip and slide, about 1/2 way through the race.

This was one of the more challenging obstacles.  We had to get ourselves over about a dozen of  these slippery, slimy, plastic pipes, under which was a disgusting river of sludge.  I saw one guy swimming under the pipes, I won't say "under water" because it definitely wasn't water, but he was fully submerged.  Ewww!

The amazing thing to me was that once we were fully muddy, we loved it!

This is near the end of the course.  We had to wait in a line for the next obstacle, so we took the time to pose.

If you haven't guessed by now, Kylie LOVED being muddy!  I have a picture of her when she was about three, sitting in the dirt in front of our townhouse in Palatine, covered head to foot in dirt...she hasn't changed a bit!  If I can find the picture, I'll add it for comparison.

Jimmy and Mariann (she's chewing gum! ewww!)

I felt a lot muddier than I look.  You can't really see, but on top of my head is a solid mass of mud, thanks to my good friend Brooke.

This was a hard obstacle, too.  It was so muddy and slippery that it made it challenging to get over the top without loosing your grip.

While we waited for the final obstacle, Kylie and Julia had the brilliant idea of rolling down this hill...you can't really see it, but there's a huge rock right under Kylie's hip.  She got a massive bruise!

This was the hardest one for me...Kylie was so sweet and helped me over.

Almost to the finish, all together like we promised!

We did it!  And I had such a great time.  I'm so glad my crazy friends convinced me to loosen up and give it a try.

Jared wasn't able to run with us because he sprained his ankle, but fortunately Kylie is a generous friend and knew he wanted to share in the mud.

Check out this pile of nastiness!  People could donate their shoes...yuck!  I took mine home and washed them.  After several power-washings, they actually got pretty clean and now they're my yard work shoes.

This is the shower area.  Kind of creepy, but I was so muddy that I didn't care.  It felt so good to spray all the muck out of every crease and crevice, well, as much as you can without fully undressing!

Another thing to check off the bucket list!  I don't know that I'll ever do another Dirty Dash, but knowing my friends, they'll come up with something equally crazy next time!

13.1...Been There, Run That!

I did it!  I did it, and I lived to tell about it!  And I did it 27 seconds faster than my goal time!  My official time for my first ever 1/2 marathon was 2:29:33.  It was an amazing experience, one of the physically most difficult things I've ever done (pretty much tied with being in labor...which I actually only did once and had an epidural, so maybe running 13.1 miles was harder...)

The beginning of the race was wonderful:  a beautiful course, the energy from the crowd, the excitement of finally doing what I set out to do.  I ran with Brooke for the first mile or so, and then she sped off and I settled into a nice pace.  I ended up in a kind of bubble, almost isolated, with no one really surrounding me.  Runners would pass me every once in a while, but not that often, and I only passed a few people.  I could see the big pack ahead of me, and I knew there were a lot of people behind me, but I wasn't in a group of runners.  I'm not sure why, or that it really matters, I just thought it was odd and interesting.

I felt really strong the first 9 miles...Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down a Dream" got me through the hilly section on the "desert side" between miles 6 and 8, and seeing Mariann's excited, encouraging face at the end of the big bridge around mile 9 really helped. She ran with me for a minutes and I told her I was doing great.  I ran another 1/2 mile or so, and then it got hard.  I was hot, the air was warmer and drier than I'm used to, and my legs were  really tired.  But I pressed on, pouring water over my head at the aid stations and drinking the Power-ade, imagining myself crossing the finish line.

My time at mile 11 was about 2:05 and I thought to myself, "I can do this, I can beat my goal!" which up to that point I was thinking would be great, but probably not possible.  When I got to the bottom of the bridge the leads to the finish line, the word "FINISH" and three big arrows were chalked onto the pavement.  I saw that and started to cry, knowing that I was so close to accomplishing this huge goal I had set for myself a year ago.  I was hyperventilating a little, trying to keep my breathing under control so I could make it across the bridge and not pass out.  "We are the Champions" was playing on my iPod, so very fitting!  "No time for losers, cause we are the champions of the world...." helped me to go the few more steps.

I could hear my friends cheering for me as I got close to the finish line, but I couldn't see them.  My eyes were full of tears and my breathing still wasn't under control.   As I crossed the finish line, I felt so strong, but so weak at the same time.  I kept saying to myself, (and maybe out loud, I don't know for sure) "I DID IT! I DID IT!" All my training, all my praying, all my hoping and dreaming came together and pushed me through.  There are so many hard things we go through in life that don't have a definite "finish line" at the end.  It felt so good to cross that line, to know that I had worked hard and accomplished my goal.  To have good friends running with me and cheering for me made it even sweeter.

We stopped at Rusty's in Cashmere on the way to Wenatchee...maybe next year we can check out the Applets and Cotlets factory!

After we dropped our bags off at the hotel, we walked around downtown for a bit.  It was a beautiful day, I just had to take a picture of the temperature...we've been training in 40 to 50 degree weather, so it was a little intimidating to see 72 on the sign...although I knew we'd be done before 3:30 in the afternoon.

We stopped at the Owl Soda Fountain and got some yummy treats!  Stephanie flew up from Las Vegas to join us for the weekend.  It was so great to have her with us!

Saturday morning, ready for the race!  Kendra and I trained together all winter.  She's a great motivator! Sadly, she's moving to Utah in May.  Hopefully we can convince her to join us next year like Steph did this year.

Most of the running group...L to R: Gretchen's friend Kristin, who lives in Wentachee, me, Pam, Greg, Kendra, and Brooke.  Leslie and Rhonda hadn't come down to the start line yet.

1/2 marathoners at the START!   Will we be this happy at the FINISH?

Leslie, Kristin, Rhonda and Greg before their start.  The 10K and full marathon started 15 minutes after the 1/2.  Rhonda ran the full marathon, her first!  The others ran the 10K.  Leslie surprised us and signed up for the 10K the night before; we thought she had come just to cheer us on.  Way to go Leslie!

Crossing the FINISH LINE!  You can't see my face, but I'm crying...in joy, in pain, in exhaustion...

WE DID IT!  First 1/2 Marathons for all of us!  I'm so proud of our group!

Pam and Greg...both won 2nd place in their age divisions.  They are truly inspiring.  Pam's time was around 1:54...she beat us all!

Cheering at the finish line, waiting for Rhonda to finish the full.

And here she comes, looking like she just went for a stroll in the park!  Her time was 4:10, amazing for a first marathon!

She was so happy and said she felt great!

We are the Champions!

Our dedicated cheering squad:  Gretchen, Mariann, and Stephanie. They're all planning to run the 1/2 next year, right girls?

Our post-race tradition...burgers and shakes at Dusty's

Our little vegetarian eating a real hamburger!  When you run a full marathon, you can eat whatever you want!

What a great group of women!  I feel so blessed to have such supportive friends.
