Regionals 2012 - Day Two

Day two was full of more exciting races, though not quite as dramatic as the first day!
The JV8+ finals was in the morning, and confidence was high.

The girls "hot seated" the boy's boat, which means the boys finished their race and the girls jumped right in, so they didn't have a boat to carry down to the launch.
I was disappointed, I like seeing them carry the boat!

Here's their team huddle, with final words of encouragement from Emma, the assistant coach.
Their head coach, Barb, left last night to attend her daughter's college graduation.

Here come the boys, fresh from their race!

The trade off...

and they're on their way!

This was our first glimpse of the boats coming down the course.  So you can see why yesterday we couldn't tell that it wasn't our boat in lane one.  It's impossible to tell the boats apart from this distance.

Still pretty hard to tell which is our boat, but we're the one closest to the safety boat...in about 3rd place...

still in third, but gaining...

Now they're in 2nd, can they take the lead?

Not quite!  They won 2nd by about 1/2 a boat's length!  We were so excited for them!  It was a great race!

They were pretty exhausted after the race, and not in quite as high spirits as yesterday.  Half of the boat had to rush back and get ready for their JV4+ timed finals.  That race was scheduled only two hours after this one, so they only had a short time to rest and refuel. They have to be out on the water warming up about 45 minutes before their race starts, so not much time at all to relax.

Team huddle before the race...somehow they escaped after this and I didn't get to see them carry the boat down and launch.  The next time I saw them, they were in the middle of their race.

This was a final only race, which meant they didn't have a heat race to qualify for finals.  They were in the middle of the field the whole time, with the first two boats quite a bit ahead, so it was hard to take a picture to show their relationship to the other boats.

It looks like they're all alone, but they were in fourth.

This is right after the finish, Kylie is the rower in the back laying down.  They were so exhausted!

Coming in after the race.  Personally, I don't think it was fair they had two races scheduled on the same day. The other half of their 8+ boat had their 4+ race the next day, which makes so much more sense.

Each race they braid their hair all alike.
