Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day was pretty special this year!  In Mexico, Mother's Day is always May 10, so Nate got to call on Saturday.  We were expecting just a phone call, like at Christmas, but when he called he said that some wonderful members of the Puerto Penasco Branch had offered to let him and his companion use their computer so they could Skype!  That was the best Mother's Day present, ever! It was so good to see his face! We got to talk for about an hour and it was so hard to say goodbye when the time was up.

On Sunday we got together with family and had a nice dinner.  I love these wonderful women!  I'm so glad I am their daughter, sister, or mother!

Two years will go quickly, right?

The time has finally come to send my first born off on a mission!  I am an emotional mess!  We went to the Stake Center on Tuesday night for him to be set apart, which was a beautiful, spiritual, tearful event.  The blessing President Gillespie gave him made me cry through almost the whole thing. He touched on so many things that I have been praying about for Nathan--the importance of him staying positive and looking for the good in all situations, the love he will feel for the people in Mexico, his ability to be a good example and leader, and the strength he will gain in his own testimony.

The Bells were there right before us, so we snapped a few pictures.

Jared, President Gillespie, and Nathan

Afterwards we went out to dinner with the family.

Packing! Just looking at this makes me want to cry!  So few material items for two whole years...but the material items are not the important things!

Early morning, packed and ready to head out to the 4:40am ferry to catch a 7:00am flight.

On the ferry...don't they look a little more like FBI agents than missionaries?

That's better...

Hopefully these boys will remember that they have moms who will always be there looking out for them!  Mary has been a good friend since we moved to Bainbridge.  She is a great example and support, and I look to her for advice and encouragement.

These sisters will miss their big brother!

A bleary-eyed group...lack of sleep and plenty of tears, too!  The time at the airport was way too short!

He jumped into the security line and was almost whisked away before I could take a picture of him with Ben.  It made me so sad to see him disappear past the security check point...sad, but also excited, happy, nervous, proud...

Emily, Jared's sister, sent this picture to us.  It was so good to see they made it safely to Utah!
Watch out world, here come the Bainbridge boys!

Nate's farewell

As is tradition, Nate spoke in church about a week before he left for the MTC.  He and Jared Bell shared the time.  They have been friends since before they were born, and it was wonderful to see them both reaching this mile-stone together.  Almost miraculously, things have worked out that they will be reporting to the MTC on the same day, November 6th, and will be on the same flight to Salt Lake City, sitting next to each other!  I know this has helped calm some of Nathan's nervousness about leaving.

After church, we had lunch with the extended family, a Mexican fiesta in honor of Nate's destination.  I tried to get pictures of everyone, but didn't quite accomplish my goal...

Nate and  "Uncle" Jonathan (really they're cousins once removed, or something like that...)

Troianna, Kaelyn and Alexis (who would be Nate's second cousins, I think...)

Uncle Jeff (who is really an Uncle!)

Grandma Vikki and Kjersty (also a cousin, once removed)

Sisters, and Jonah! (cousin)

Brad and Aunt Ashley (a real aunt!)

It's getting closer...

You know the time for a missionary to leave is coming closer when they get to go to the temple!  Nathan has been preparing to go for several months now.  We went on a Friday evening, and it just happened to be the same time as our good friend, Bruce Nowjack's first time.  It was a wonderful evening.  As we were leaving the temple, Nathan said, "I felt so good in there!  I didn't want to leave!"  He was able to go back several times over the next few weeks: once for the Nowjack's sealing a week later, once with his friend Emma, another time with Jared Bell for his endowment, and again to help perform baptisms with the youth.  He felt so blessed  to be able to participate in all the ordinances that take place in the temple before he left.

Ben's 11th Birthday

'Tis the season for birthdays!  Ben's and Grandma Vikki's birthdays are one day (and 53 years) apart, so we celebrated them together this year.

They both chose pie over cake; banana cream for Grandma and apple for Ben.

Ben's favorite present this year was from Nathan, a set of  Dungeons and Dragons books!

They started strategizing right away! It has been so nice seeing Ben and Nathan spend so much time together as Nate has been home for the past few months getting ready for his mission.

The big 20!

I thought I felt old when Nathan turned 18...now he's 20!!! How can that be when I feel like I'm not much older than 30?

Ben decorated the cake with Nathan's favorite candy.  He's lucky he was born near Halloween so candy corn are always available around his birthday...or maybe that's why he likes them so much...although I know I didn't eat lots of them when I was pregnant with him because I don't really like them that much.

Seriously contemplating his wish!  Lots to wish for with all the big changes coming up in his life.

Emma came over to celebrate with us, too.  She is such a great girl.  I'm glad she and Nate have become good friends.  She is leaving on her mission about six weeks after Nate, so unfortunately they won't see each other at the MTC.

Opening presents!  Ben gave him a pound of Bon Bon fudge.  Now that's my kind of candy!

Obviously everyone knows Nate likes candy!  The Crunch Berries and Jelly Bellies are from Kylie, the boxes of candy from Grandma Vikki, and the messenger bag from Brad and I.  He can fill it full of his candy and bring it everywhere with him!

Earlier in the day, Brad and I took Nate out for lunch.  It's so strange to think that he won't be here to celebrate his next two birthdays with us.

Summer Vacation Part 1 -- Rexburg and Yellowstone

We decided to combine picking up Nate from BYU-I with our family vacation this year.  We  fondly remembered our RV road trip when the kids were young, and since this is probably our last year of summer vacationing with the six of us, we decided it would be great fun to do it again.  The gas for an RV can really add up, so we chose to drive our van to Missoula, MT, pick up the RV there, then proceed on to Rexburg to get Nate.  From Rexburg we would head out to Yellowstone, then up to Glacier National Park, then back to Missoula to drop off the RV and drive back home.

About 20 minutes into the trip, we heard this loud crashing noise coming from the top of the RV.  At first we thought maybe the air conditioning unit had broken off! We pulled over and could still see the air conditioner, so Kylie offered to climb up and see if she could find anything.  She yelled down that there was some kind of panel that was attached only by a wire with a pile of 8 screws sitting next to it.  Hmmmm....  We called the rental company and they had no idea what it was.  We finally deduced that it was a solar panel that someone had forgotten to attach properly.  Good thing we had some duct tape with us!  Kylie taped it to the roof and we were on our way again!

Then a few hours later, while I was driving, another loud banging/shuddering came from the back of the RV.  Brad started yelling at me to pull over.  I finally found a wide enough spot on the shoulder and upon inspection, we found we had a flat tire on the inner rear tire.  Ugh!  Another call to the rental company, who told us to call their emergency repair number.  We also called AAA, upgraded to RV service, and requested a tire repair.  By the time the rental company finally called back, AAA had already sent someone out and he was well on his way to replacing the tire.

Waiting on the side of the road...at least it was pretty!

And we got to watch a beautiful sun set!

We were back on the road after about an hour and a half.  By this time it was close to 9pm.
We still hadn't eaten dinner, but thought we could find something on our way to Rexburg.  No such luck!  There is literally NOTHING between southern Montana and Rexburg, Idaho!  We finally made it to Rexburg just before midnight, picked up Nate, and headed straight to Wendy's.  Yes, we did consider stopping at Wendy's before picking up Nate, but decided to be nice!

We camped in the parking lot behind Nate's apartment for the night.

Here's Nate bidding farewell to his apartment.  He wasn't at all sad to leave!

Then we headed out to Yellowstone!  First stop was West Yellowstone, a tourist trap for sure.  We let the kids shop for souvenirs for a few hours, but were anxious to get to our real destination.

We finally made it!  And it was beautiful!

Our first stop was Gibbon Falls.  It took us a little while to figure out that the Gibbon Falls picnic area was not the same as Gibbon Falls itself!  We walked up the river a bit wondering, "Where are the falls?"

The girls couldn't see them from this rock, either, so we got back in the RV and drove a little further...

And then we found the falls!

We found the Artist Paintpot without any trouble and walked along the boardwalk intrigued by the steaming, bubbling, gushing earth.

Our first glimpses of buffalo!  As we drove through Hayden Valley, we could see them dotting the prairie.

The further we went, the closer they got to the road, until traffic came to a standstill.  Eventually cars started coming the other way and people told us there were buffalo on the road up ahead.

They weren't kidding!  This big guy went right past our RV! A ranger in his truck was trying to herd them off the road.  We crept slowly past and admired their massiveness.

Our first night, we camped at Fishing Bridge, right near Yellowstone Lake.  It was basically an RV parking lot, but the lake wasn't too far from the campground.

Nate and Kylie finally found a spot where they could get two bars of cell-service to send/receive texts.

We sat by the lake and watched the sun set.

The next morning we headed up to Old Faithful.  We got there about 20 minutes before it was due to erupt.

Showing signs...

And there she blows!  I have to admit, I was a bit under-whelmed.  Still pretty cool to say I've seen it, though.

After Old Faithful, we hit the Fountain Paint Pots, which in my opinion were much more impressive.

And then on to Mammoth Hot Springs.

This looks like ice, but it's actually boiling hot water flowing down the rock

Kylie reached over and confirmed that the water is hot!

A bit more desolate scenery-wise.

It was very hot out, and the kids weren't too impressed with this area.  I made them climb up to the top overlook area (above their heads in this picture), which overlooked nothing and they were very unhappy with me.

Our favorite part of Yellowstone was the Boiling River.  I'd heard about it, but it wasn't marked on the map we had.  Fortunately as we were driving down the mountain from Mammoth, we could see people playing in the river below so we were on the lookout for a place to pull over.  It was about 1/2 mile hike along the river to the exact spot,

and we encountered these guys on the way.

This is the spot where the boiling hot water from the Boiling River flows down and meets the freezing cold water from the Gardiner River.

It forms lovely pools where you can sit and relax!

We were highly entertained by the amorous couple next to us...

I wish we would have had more than 1 1/2 days in Yellowstone.  There was so much more to see!

We spent our 3rd night in an RV park in Gardiner, a small town just outside Yellowstone.

This tiny LDS chapel was on the other side of the fence from the RV park.

The view from our "campsite."
