Snowshoeing and Sledding in the Olympics

A few days after Christmas, we decided to head up to the Olympics and play in the snow.  We went to the great sledding spot we found last year when we cut our tree, which didn't have any snow a month ago and now has LOTS! It was a little hard to get there, even with our 4x4 truck.

Our first stop was for snowshoeing.  We parked the truck, strapped on the snowshoes and started hiking.

The snow was beautiful, powdery and soft enough to lay in!

Brad and Ben climbed up this hill and rolled huge snowballs down.  We made a snowman, but I didn't get a picture.

We hiked and played in the snow for about 45 minutes, then decided to head back down.

When we reached the sledding hill, the snow was deep enough that it scraped the bottom of the doors when we opened them and there was no way to turn the truck around.  The truck got stuck when Brad tried to get off the main track, so he worked on digging out the tires while Kylie, Ben and I sledded.

 Check out that pristine snow!

Ben hiking up to the top.

It was a steep, long run!

Brad got the truck dug out and had to back up the road to a better place for turning around.  While he was gone, he encountered a guy who was really stuck.  His truck was off the road in the ditch.  When we finished sledding, we went back to help him. Another truck came along and with our combined truck power, we were able to get him out. (All three were Toyota 4x4s...we could have made a Toyota commercial!) Heading back down was even more treacherous than going up, but we made it safely!

Christmas Day

By Christmas, our tree had been up for over a month and was getting pretty droopy.  But the Christmas Spirit was still the same!  The kids woke up about 7:00 to open their stockings  and didn't wake up Brad and I until 8:00. (It gets later every year!)

We said we were going to have a "small" Christmas this year, but it seemed like there were just as many, if not more, presents!

Nate made Ben a cool wooden sword.

Kylie's favorite gift was a North Face raincoat.  It was the only thing she really wanted this year.

We gave our Cake Boss some cake decorating tools. Oh yeah!

As a gag-gift (kind of...), I gave Brad a portable camping toilet.

Nate got lots of things he needs for school, including these warm boots.

Ben's big gift was an X-Box, since Nate is taking his to college.

No pictures of me, sorry!  Brad gave me a new blender, since I love to make smoothies.  The one we had, we'd gotten for our wedding almost 20 years ago and it wasn't exactly blending anymore.  After opening presents, we had a delicious breakfast of German pancakes and then everyone relaxed or played with their new toys.

Later in the day, we went over to my mom's for Christmas dinner with my sisters and their families.  I forgot to take a group picture, but we were all there!

Christmas Eve

Another fun year of "Chinese Christmas" at Grandma Vikki's:

Chillin' with the babies before the big game.

Brandon and Nolan are going to earn money in the Circus to pay for medical school.  Brandon starts school in the Grand Caymans in January, so we won't see them for a few years. I don't think his Circus gig will last very long, with the way Nolan is growing!

The anticipation!

We had a good sized group this year...33 people!  Roya brought her fiance and his daughter, the princess.

The newlyweds, Zach and Emily were there for the beginning of the game, but they had to leave early.  (Emily is hiding behind Jonathan.) We think they showed up just to help Jonathan's family cheat...when they left, they gave their numbers to Kalyn and Alexis, with the "promise" that the girls would give them the gifts they chose with their numbers.  We retaliated by sending Nate over to spy on them.

Our friends, the Hansens, were there, too.  Kate was thrilled with the gift she opened...an arm rest organizer and some popcorn!  Mariann gave me the gift that she would have brought if she hadn't moved to Texas and insisted I bring to to the party. I kept it in my closet for four months, waiting for the big reveal. Kate was only a little bit sad when Alicia stole it from her.

Tattoo sleeves were one of the more popular "stealers" this year...

They made the rounds...

at least among the Van Akens.

After the party, we lit off one of the sky lanterns that was another of the "stealers."

They're really beautiful to watch, but it was a little scary when it almost got caught in a tree!
Fortunately, it made it over and we watched until it was no bigger than a star, glittering in the night sky.

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!

Our ward Christmas party this year was an Elf Training for the Primary kids put on by the Young Men and Young Women.  They did a fabulous job!
Even Ben, who is way too quickly losing his childhood innocence, enjoyed it.

Our YM president was perfect as the head elf.  I think he's found a new calling in life! He welcomed the kids and explained the evening.  They each received a "passport" and were guided to the different training locations.

Each room was decorated and had an activity related to Elf training, such as Christmas Bingo, which Kylie was in charge of.

And cookie decorating with Jingle Bells Jillian.

More of the cookie crew:  Aubrey, Shirley, and Jillian.
They also learned about snowman building (marshmallow snowmen), Christmas tree decorating (construction paper trees), snow ball throwing (wiffle balls thrown through a snowman cut-out), Elf games,  and made Elf ID cards.

Isn't his costume great?!

While the kids were being tutored in the fine arts of Elf-craft, the adults enjoyed hors d'ouevres  and socializing.

What Elf Training is complete without a visit to the biggest elf of them all?  I love the look on Ben's face,"I'm on to you, big guy!"  He said he was going to ask Santa his middle name so he could figure out who he really was, but once Santa said, "Hi, Ben!" he knew right away.

The hardworking Elf trainers got a chance to eat and visit, too.

Three of the cutest elves!

Christmas Wreath

I've been wanting to make my own Christmas wreath for several years now.  A friend and I used to get together to make them, but she moved away about eight years ago.  This year, I was determined not to buy another Costco wreath!  I recruited Ben to help and set up shop in the garage.  First, we had to build a wreath form.  In the past, I've always borrowed one, but they are easy to make, I had the supplies on hand, and I knew Ben would love hammering in all the nails!

In case you want to make one of your own, here's how:

First, get a square piece of plywood about 22" to 24" square (22" is probably the smallest for an 18" wreath).
Then find the middle of the square and mark it with a pencil.  Make yourself a handy "pencil compass" with a 9" piece of string tied to a pencil.  Have your helper hold the end of the string on the center of the board and draw an 18" circle.
Third, get about a dozen long, sturdy nails (about 4" long, I used 14), and have your helper hammer them around the perimeter of the circle at even intervals (think a clock).
And voila!  You've got your wreath form.

To make a wreath, first you have to collect all the supplies.  Fortunately, I am surrounded by cedar and fir trees, and lots of other great, wild-growing, wreath making plants like holly, evergreen huckleberry, salal, and Oregon grape, and I have other evergreens growing in my gardens.  Anything with evergreen leaves makes great wreaths, but I like cedar and fir boughs for the base. Try to find long, supple, thinner branches, around the size of your thumb at the cutting point.  Anything much bigger is harder to work with. You'll need eight to ten boughs for a nice, full, wreath. Collect lots of "decorations," too. The more variety you can find, the better.  I even had some hydrangeas still on my bushes that were perfectly dried, so I snipped them off and added them to my collection.  You'll also need some wire to tie everything together. If your boughs are thicker, you'll need thicker wire, but I was able to get away with using thin, green florist wire.

Putting the wreath together:  Take a bough and wrap it around on the INSIDE of the nails. The nails are there to hold the wreath's form until you wire it all together.  Tuck all the stray branches in so not much is poking out along the outside of the nails.  Your second bough should start in a different spot than your first, but wrap in the same direction.  All boughs need to wrap in the same direction.  Once you've got your boughs wrapped in as full as you'd like, take your wire and secure the boughs together, wrapping the wire under the wreath and tying the wire around all the boughs to keep them together.  Do this in about six different spots around the wreath.

Then you get to start decorating!  Poke in your various evergreen beauties wherever you'd like around the wreath and wire them in if they feel like they're not going to stay on their own.  I used extra wire on my hydrangeas since they're not as sturdy.  To make a hanger, find the "top" of your wreath and if there's not already a wrap of wire at that spot, add one, then make a  loop of wire (I used four strands of the florist's wire to make sure it was sturdy) and secure it to the wire that's wrapped around the wreath.

Ben starting to decorate with some holly.

Jillian came out and gave us some decorating advice.

The finished product!  I was very pleased with how it turned out. I especially love the hydrangeas!

Here it is hanging on my front door.  Much prettier than any Costco wreath!

Decorating the Tree

Happy 65th, Dad!

My dad's birthday is November 29, so we get a second opportunity to celebrate with family a few days after  Thanksgiving.  This time, we let mom be the hostess. We had a delicious pork roast dinner, with delicatta squash, apple sauce, green beans, and salad.

I was in the kitchen with my dad and sisters and wanted to take a picture of the four of us.  Then the little kids saw us taking a picture so they joined in, then the bigger kids, and it ended up being almost a family picture.

Dad and my boys

Opening presents

Corey and her boys made this for Dad. She's always so creative.  He loved it!
It says, "My Grandpa is a BIG HUNK. Sometimes we call him SUGAR DADDY and he calls us his SUGAR BABIES.  When we go to visit him U-NO you will have MOUNDS of fun and a GOOD & PLENTY time.  He likes to pretend he is a JOLLY RANCHER when he works with his bees.  If he's lucky he'll get a BIT O'HONEY from them. We love to LOOK for bears with him down the ROCKY ROAD or along 5th AVENUE.  When we work with Grandpa it is...

always a PAYDAY.  If we scoop up enough TOOTSIE ROLLS we might earn 100 GRAND.  Even though Grandpa is getting old and sometimes calls NERDS WHATCHAMACALLIT, he's no DUM DUM, he's a real SMARTIE. He never gets mad at us, he just says, "OH HENRY!" and then "CHUCKLES." So Grandpa, for your birthday we hope you TAKE 5 and enjoy your day. We love you!!"

Group shot!

Hyrum, Tif, Ryota, Mom, Dad, Jonah, Jillian, Tad, Mariko (sitting on the couch)
Corey, Landon, Kylie, Ben and Me (sitting on the floor)

Grandpa and "Cake Boss" (Yes, she's also the "Pie Princess!" She's very talented!)

Grandpa loved his cake and was so happy to have us all there to celebrate with him.

I have the best dad.  He loves to be with his kids and grandkids.  He's always busy helping someone or working on a project, usually with one of his kids or grandkids.  He knows how to do just about everything, and if he doesn't he'll figure it out and then teach someone else how to do it. I love you, Dad!
